Core Ontology of MultiMedia Released
A first version of the Core Ontology of MultiMedia (COMM) has been released. This ontology is part of the X-Media annotation framework. The ontology is formalized using OWL.

Successful Scientific Board Meeting on 17 April in Athens Greece
The first annual scientific board review of the project was held in Athens, Greece, on the 17th of April. Board members are Prof. Andrew McCallum (U. of Massachusetts at Amherst), Prof. Alan Smeaton (City U. Dublin) and Prof. Guus Schreiber (U. of Amsterdam).
The board started with a general presentation of the aims of the project by the X-Media director, followed by in-depth descriptions of the work done in the different workpackages. A 2 hour demo session complemented the day.

Successful Review for X-Media
The first annual review of X-Media was held in Athens on 19-20 April.
The review was very successful. The reviewers noted that the The project goals are very relevant to the IST programme objectives and that the project proceeds according to plan with high market prospects. Among the main positive points noted by the reviewers were: the level of Involvement of the end-users which was defined as "brilliant".

Knowledge in Multimedia
The workshop on „Knowledge in Multimeda“ at the IST-2006 conference on November 22 gathered about 70 people interested in how the envelope for multimedia understanding could be pushed. The workshop presenters gave a comprehensive picture explaining which dimensions – and correspondingly which research and technology efforts - are relevant in order to understand multimedia data (cf. picture).
The presenters explained how the development of IT drives the need for as well as the power of multimedia understanding. Thereby, cross-media understanding ranked very highly on the wish-list of the presenters and intensive research such as performed in X-media is a pre-requisite to managing the knowledge found in multimedia in the decades to come.

The X-media consortium met for three days in Koblenz at the University of Koblenz
During the three days, an intense internal discussion set the basis for the work for the next months. The pre-review is coming on the following day. M12 will see the finalisation of a number deliverables; the definition of the main methodologies among them.
One of the main outcomes of the meeting was the definition of the new 18 month plan and the finalisation of the vision demonstrators. The vision demonstrators are to be used to drive the development and integration of the X-Media technology and will also be used as showcases for the technology.

Star of the Meeting Award

The X-media consortium met for four days in Orbassano, near Turin at Centro Ricerche Fiat.
One of the main outcomes of the meeting was the definition of the vision demonstrators. The vision demonstrators are to be used to foster discussion among the partners on the future X-Media technology and will also be used as showcases for the technology.

X-media will be present at IST Conference 2006.
The networking session on "Knowledge in Multimedia Content" at the IST Conference in Helsinki, Wednesday 22/11, is organized by Yiannis Kompatsiaris from X-Media partner ITI/Certh (Greece). The session will include presenters from further X-media partners including Steffen Staab (University of Koblenz-Landau, Germany), Hans-Peter Schnurr (Ontoprise GmbH, Germany) and Yannis Avrithis (ITI, Greece).
